Hawk Island Snow park not planning to reopen

Despite a few limited openings in the past week, the Hawk Island Snow Park in Lansing is not planning to open again this year unless the temperature drops and the area receives a substantial amount of snow.

Urban Snow Parks LLC Project Coordinator Pete Boscheff said the warm weather comes at an inconvenient time, as the park was scheduled to host an event sponsored by Burton, a snowboarding company, later this week.

Boscheff said the company spent tens of thousands of dollars to bring the event to Lansing, and park employees were saddened to cancel the event.

“There is too much rain in the forecast to keep the park open,” Boscheff said of why the park will likely be closed the rest of the week.

He hopes to reschedule the event with Burton next fall.

The reason the park was able to open this weekend was because temperatures dropped low enough for snow to stick to the runs, but admission was free because the park’s staff had to shut down some parts of runs early because of inclement weather.

This season was more of a training season for staff as they learned to use the equipment and process of maintaining the park, Boscheff said.

He said he would be surprised if the park was able to open again this year.

Even though the park has not been open frequently, Boscheff said the community still has been enthusiastic about the park so far.
He estimated about 300 to 400 people visited the park each time it opened in the past week.

Although the park has not been open much this winter, Boscheff said he believes the park might be changing the culture of the Lansing community.

Boscheff said over the past month, he received emails quite frequently from people hoping there would be snow and the temperature would drop so the park could open.

“Who in a million years thought they’d see multiple email posts from people who want a cold winter?” Boscheff said.
