Penn State clinches title, helps Spartan tourney hopes
On Monday night, it became official.
The MSU women’s basketball team (17-10 overall, 9-5 Big Ten) will not repeat as Big Ten Champions, as No. 11 Penn State clinched a share of the title last night in an 84-66 victory over No. 8 Ohio State.
This isn’t all bad news for the Spartans, as the loss by Ohio State pulls MSU within a game of second place, and the Buckeyes have a tough final week of the season that includes traveling to Nebraska.
Also Penn State winning the conference championship will help MSU as it makes its case for the NCAA Tournament.
The Nittany Lions have only lost three Big Ten games, but two of those losses came to MSU, and with each win by Penn State, the Spartans’ earlier victories look better and better.
In ESPN’s most recent projected NCAA Tournament bracket, Charlie Creme now has MSU as one of his last four teams into the tournament.
Creme has the Spartans listed as a No. 11 seed and scheduled to play No. 6 seed South Carolina.
