Pressure builds, Sully sinks
A few notes following Tuesday night’s games:
No. 6 MSU hoped to gain a little breathing room in the race for the Big Ten title, but the two closest competitors, No. 8 Ohio State and No. 11 Michigan, came away victors to stay within a game of the Spartans.
Ohio State handled Illinois, 83-67, easily as the Illini continue to sink with distractions surrounding head coach Bruce Weber.
Michigan passed presumably the toughest test it had left in a trip to Northwestern. The Wildcats gave them a scare, but the Wolverines came out strong in overtime, 67-55.
Sinking Sullinger
A few hours after MSU’s Draymond Green was selected as National Player of the Week, Ohio State forward Jared Sullinger gave Green the nod to go ahead in the race for the Big Ten Player of the Year.
After a stellar week that saw the senior forward average 20 points, 10 rebounds and six assists — especially in the week following a game that saw Green’s Spartans best Sullinger’s Buckeyes — Green already established himself as the frontrunner in the race.
But in Tuesday’s win — following a loss on Saturday — Sullinger fouled out with just nine points and six rebounds.
Barring a huge collapse, Green should have some hardware to collect at the end of the season.
