Former Spartans Miller, Abdelkader show up in Red Wings' win Sunday
A pair of former Spartans shone on national TV Sunday during the Detroit Red Wing’s game against the San Jose Sharks for Hockey Day In America.
Red Wings forward Drew Miller — of the famous MSU hockey Miller dynasty — recorded a goal and an assist on the way to helping Detroit to its 23rd consecutive home win, a 3-2 victory over the Sharks. The goal came midway through the second period, and gave the Wings a two-score lead.
Miller played for the Spartans from 2003-2006, before he was signed to the Anaheim Mighty Ducks after his junior season.
Detroit forward Justin Abdelkader also saw his share of the spotlight, notching an assist in the game, but his time on the ice likely was marked by another instance.
With about five minutes left in the game, Abdelkader found himself sans gloves, scrapping with San Jose’s Ryane Clowe behind the Red Wings’ net. It wasn’t the first time the two squared off, as Abdelkader and Clowe previously had gotten into it when the Red Wings were facing the Sharks in the 2011 NHL quarterfinals.
In no uncertain terms did Abdelkader have the upper hand here, as he was on the receiving end of a number of haymakers without much reciprocation before the two skaters were separated by the refs. Still, Abdelkader came away with the team victory, and Clowe went home to San Jose with nothing more than his pride and maybe a bruised fist.
